Nice. I really thought the shot with the pigeon at the end was from one of his films

Cameraman: Hey Terrence, how many wide-angle lens shots do you want? Terence Malick: YES. I love Terrence Malick. He's truly phenomenal and wonderful and unique. He's a magical filmmaker and created some of my absolute favorite movies. Badlands, Tree of Life, and even Knight of Cups and Song to Song are all totally perfect to me. I don't dislike any of the other ones, but they didn't resonate with me the same way. Days of Heaven is pretty, but the voice over felt kind of unnecessary and off. Thin Red Line is very good too, but a bit overly long and in need of shortening. I haven't seen the New World, but Tree of Life is absolutely perfect and I could literally watch it an infinite number of times and never get bored. Same with Badlands, probably the best romance movie ever in my opinion. But after Tree of Life, generally considered his master work, is where things get iffy. His movies start to get more similar, which they weren't before. One theory is they become more personal. Tree of Life was about the death of Malick's brother, for example. To the Wonder is next and is probably about Malick's first marriage ending. Also, it's quite good, but never reaches the same level as his previous works. I enjoy it a lot but I feel Affleck may have been miscast. Maybe that was the point though. Still, beautiful film and very memorable. Knight of Cups is phenomenal. Really, no flaws at all here. This one also seems to be about Malick's brother's death but also his father. I really, really like this one. It's one of his best. The backlash it got simply made no sense to me. It's when I started to stop trust critics entirely. Song to Song is also truly amazing. Beautiful, heartbreaking, sweet, and mesmerizing. The symbolism is amazing, the dialogue is very good, and it just feels like an extension of Knight of Cups but in the best possible way. The two films fit so well together. The final shot of Song to Song is possibly the greatest image Malick has ever produced. It's an amazing movie on so many levels. But then I saw A Hidden Life. And really, I didn't hate it. It's still beautiful, it's still unique, and the acting is very very good. But it's far too long and says far too little. There's no development, no change within the characters, just self indulgent meandering is misery. Over and over again, we see the same images, same places, it's like a slide show. He doesn't tend to do that, his movies are vast but somehow efficient. Usually. Not this time. The final shot is the true disappointment. Usually his final shots are perfect, something meaningful and symbolic to resonate with the viewer. This is literally just a shot of a mountain that could have literally been at any other point in the film. It's awful. Maybe if it wasn't such a dour film it might work? I didn't think Thin Red Line fit his style either. I just don't think it was a good story for him to adapt I guess.

It represents the dependancy all humans have on each other. No matter our strengths or weaknesses, we all could use a push in our life to stear us right and sometimes that push comes from the least likely of places. It also shows that life isn't always about progression, we all need to live our lives. Since I've watched "To the Wonder" back in 2013, I've been deeply fascinated with the career of one Terrence Malick. He has now brought us the wonderful "A Hidden Life.
Based on real events; August Diehl (Inglourious Basterds) stars as Franz Jägerstätter, an Austrian farmer whose tranquil life with his family was fractured by him being drafted to fight for the Nazis in World War Two. We're taken on his journey as he must stand by his religious beliefs and moral opposition to them, and his family faces persecution from fellow neighbors of their tight-knit village. On that note, the Catholic beliefs of him and his wife are highlighted in a positive light in this story, which is perfectly welcome.
The technical aspects of this movie are grade A+ the immersive cinematography, score and immaculate sound design. One can see this film having elements of a few of Malick's previous films; the rural landscapes of "Days of Heaven" the World War Two setting of "The Thin Red Line" and beautiful yet bittersweet family dynamics ( The Tree of Life. br> If you're not a fan of Terrence Malick, then this probably won't do much for you. If you are or have enjoyed any of his previous films, then definitely give this a shot. For my two cents, this is his best film since "The Tree of Life.

The couple this movie was REALLY based on. What took place in Nebraska was no fictional story. It was REAL - so why not go with the real story? And at the end it says that Holly got probation which ignores how Carol Fugate got a prison term in the Nebraska Prison for Women in York, Nebraska. Located on a few miles from where my brother lived for years. I think that the real story with real locations would have been the better way to go.

To anyone who noticed that Malick's 'Knight of Cups' and 'Song to Song' barely existed in theatrical release, despite having two of the most stacked cast lists in cinema history, it had nothing to do with bad reviews. "Broad Green Pictures" purchased distribution rights for both, as well as 'Voyage of Time'. It was a startup company launched by two trust fund blessed Wall Street brothers who declared they were moving on to become "creative people". They were hyped as the next Annapurna (also launched by a pair of trust fund siblings), but didn't actually know anything about film distribution and collapsed in 3 years. Annapurna is facing its own troubles now, but at least the Ellisons went to film school. I root for them to recover, but I'm glad Broad Green is out of the picture so an actual, real distribution company can step in.
