Great stuff! Id love more arthouse reviews! There are tons of great underrated art/indie films like Death of Stalin, What We Do In the Shadows, Other Side of the Wind, etc that could use a shot of mainstream attention. Saw it a few hours ago. Its a movie Ill never forget. Ive never cried this much during a movie before, and it was so heartbreaking. This movie sounds like somebody had a really twisted fetish and nobody said no to them. I never knew there are Episcopal nuns. I have come back to this trailer like 100 times and as a marvel fan i have always wondered why am I coming back to this until I realize it was for this music. The music in here is EPIC. Nicki <3. Absolute cine. Youre at the beginning but it goes further than ‘existentialism. Remember, malick was on track to being a ‘playboy philosopher. The first to translate Heideggers being in time into English, before giving it all up to pursue film. Hes a prodigy and a polyglot. So the philosopher and the filmmaker are inseparable. So to truly understand malick or begin to understand what he infers through his cinematic avatars (Bale, sheen, Ferrell, caviezel etc.) as they wander awestruck at the world around them you have to consume his diet of philosophy to begin to truly understand. Its not enough to say hes concerned with themes of existentialism and spirituality (I used to think it was) but if you read the ancients and truly appreciate the message of say the republic let alone Heidegger or Wittgenstein, you will understand the inherent absurdity in walking around in a world constructed from ideas. Tables, chairs, cars, pavement even organic matter. We are participating in a manifestation of pure thought and it is stupefying and also hilarious. So you see ‘finding ones place or some kind of ‘meaning in existence is far too complex a question and is not, as presumed, the true aim of these films. Existence, and well refrain from defining what that is in and of itself for that is far too complicated and coded a word or a conversation. Existence in and of itself is absurd and packed enough to marvel at without questioning it or the ids place in it all. Simply put- keep going. But beware, there be sea monsters ahead.

I know I'm going to be in tears this entire movie. Still going to watch it. That was really good, could you do more like that. I'd like to see him do Steinbeck's To a God Unknown. If James corden is in something. Then I stay far far away.

Ugh I need to see this. Download free a hidden life insurance. It's an interesting theory, and I share the curiosity and love for Malick's work (his recent work more than his pre-TRLs work) but I don't think it's accurate to say that the actors are curious and are searching and enjoying the process. Many of the actors retrospectively have talked of their yearning for more conventional film making methods.

Auteur Terence Malick's brilliant A Hidden Life is just as beautifully photographed by DP Jorg Widmer as you'd expect from the acclaimed director. The Austrian countryside is mountain green and moody, but not really simple anymore for our heroes.
Nazi conscientious objector Franz (August Diehl) and his wife knew much better times before he refused to swear allegiance to Hitler. The 3-hour depiction of their troubled life, right down to his imprisonment and execution, is ironically one of the most beautiful films of the year and one of the most disturbing.
The contrast between the bucolic life and the imprisoned one is best served by beautiful landscapes juxtaposed with starkly cruel prisons. Malick succeeds at having us fall in love with the landscape and the heroic couple at the same time. Sometimes there seem to be short- lens anamorphic shots, with everything distorted but the center, emphasizing the loneliness of rebellion while the wide-shot landscapes offer hope of a better time sadly not to come soon enough.
Don't be fooled by my exuberant appreciation of this romance gone bad, for it is a hard study of payment due for a man to have scruples, when it would have been easy for him to sign the oath but believe inside the opposite. It is not the dialogue that will put you squarely in support of the futile objection; it is the simplicity of Franz's devotion to what is good to do, and his wife's support of that as death knell.
As might be expected, few fellow Austrians support Franz, and just as few Germans seemed to realize the horror that was Hitler. For those today who oppose autocrats, let this be a warning that necessary opposition to authority comes with a heavy payment.
